At NRG Studios Allstars, our commitment to creating a nurturing and supportive environment for young athletes goes beyond the dance and cheer floor. One of the decisions that sets us apart is our choice not to audition kids for our competition teams. Instead, we focus on fostering a sense of belonging, personal growth, and teamwork. We know this is a controversial topic! When we posted about it last year on social media, the post went viral and had so many comments. While we used to hold auditions, after Covid, we recognised that auditions didn't align with our values of supporting our kids and creating a supportive and nuturing community for them. Here's why we changed how we create our competition teams at NRG:
We Know Our Kids Inside and Out: At NRG, we see our dancers and cheerleaders every week - some of our kids are at the studio 5 days each week. We know more than just their technical abilities; we understand their strengths, personalities, and work ethic. What we see week in and out is a much more accurate picture of a child's abilities, rather than a one hour audition where a child might have an "off" performance or where they might demonstrate a skill they won't do in class consistently.
Reducing Unnecessary Pressure: Most kids who join us won't pursue professional dance careers, and that's perfectly okay. Auditions definitely have their place, we aren't anti-audition by any means. If you are wanting to go out into the professional world of performing, auditions will be daily sometimes. However if a child wants to pursue a professional career, there are soooo many opportunities to gain audition experience in the community, our studio is not their only chance to develop those skills. Our teams - especially for cheerleading - can be eclectic at times as we're a small gym. This means that we often have to bump kids up a level because they're a great base or flyer, but my not have the tumbling skills. If you are using auditions to rank athletes, you are very publicly pointing out to everyone who attends that a child does or doesn't have a certain skill. We found that this was creating a tension in our teams as it seemed "unfair" if a child who didn't have the same tumbling skills would get onto the team. Removing auditions has made our teams more cohesive because the athletes now trust that we want what is best for them and their team. We aren't putting them in a situation that can sometimes be humiliating. We believe in fostering a love for dance and cheer without creating anxiety-inducing situations or creating competition between our kids.
Personalised Placement: Our approach involves private meet-and-greets with new dancers and cheerleaders and their parents. This allows us to understand their values and aspirations. We can then place them in teams where they can thrive and feel successful. Every child's journey is unique, and we aim to support them accordingly.
Promoting a Family Atmosphere: Our studio values emphasise a sense of family and teamwork. Auditions can sometimes interfere with the strong bond between coaches and athletes. If a child is not quite ready for a higher-level team, we prefer to have a one-on-one conversation with them, rather than publicly exposing their current skill set. It's about fostering growth, not comparison.
Support and Encouragement: At NRG, it's crucial that our athletes feel supported and lifted up. Being part of NRG isn't just about getting first places; it's about finding a second home, being cared for, and discovering a community of like-minded peers who all share a desire to achieve something special. Our focus is on creating a safe space for personal and collective growth.
As you can see, our decision not to audition kids for our competition teams is rooted in our commitment to providing a supportive, nurturing, and growth-oriented environment. At NRG, it's not just about the destination; it's about the journey and the community that supports each dancer and cheerleader every step of the way. We believe in building not just exceptional athletes but also confident, well-rounded individuals who are ready to take on the world with a smile on their faces. We know the life lessons they learn while on our teams will set them up to be the best version of themselves, a great community member and an asset to any work place. And to us, there is nothing better than knowing we are positively impacting so many young lives!
