Why We Make Time to Give Back: Teaching Our Kids the Value of Community

September 29, 2026•5 min read

Volunteering is inconvenient.

There. We said it.

It takes time. It interrupts your weekend. Sometimes it costs money. Sometimes it means saying no to something else you would rather be doing.

And we think that might actually be part of the point.

We live in a world increasingly designed to remove friction from our lives. We can have dinner delivered without leaving the house. We can shop without walking into a store. We can communicate without ever having to see another person.

And while convenience can be wonderful, there are some things that can't be made frictionless - COMMUNITY - and if it is frictionless, it probably means that it isn't going to last.

Community asks something of us

Being part of a community isn't just about what that community can give to you.

It's also about what you're willing to give back.

Sometimes that means giving your time when you'd rather stay home. Sometimes it means donating money you could have spent somewhere else. Sometimes it means turning up because someone else needs you, even when turning up isn't particularly convenient.

Maybe donating $30 means skipping takeaway that week.

Maybe attending a fundraiser means missing an afternoon at a friend's house.

Maybe performing at a community event means getting up early on a Sunday when you'd rather sleep in.

Those tiny sacrifices matter.

Because our children need opportunities to learn that being part of something bigger than themselves sometimes requires them to give something of themselves too.

Happiness isn't found by constantly looking inward

We spend so much time encouraging our children to think about what they want.

What makes you happy?
What do you want to achieve?
What do you need?

Those questions have their place.

But a fulfilling life can't be built entirely around ourselves.

Some of our greatest feelings of connection, purpose and belonging come when we stop looking inward and start looking outward.

Who needs me?

How can I help?

What can I contribute?

How can I make this little corner of the world better because I'm in it?

Contribution creates connection.

And connection is something our kids desperately need.

That's why volunteering is part of NRG

Throughout the year, we deliberately create opportunities for our NRG kids and families to contribute to the wider community.

Not because we need another performance.

Not because our kids need another trophy, photo or certificate.

Because we want them to experience what it feels like to use something they love to help someone else.

Our recent Cheer 4 A Cause was one of our biggest yet, and we were blown away by the number of people who showed up.

People gave their time. Families donated money. Coaches contributed. Kids participated.

Together, we raised money for the Cancer Council — but we also created something that can't be counted in the fundraising total.

Our kids got to experience contribution.

They saw a community of people choosing to give something because helping others mattered.

Sometimes the lesson is bigger than the performance

We also recently had the privilege of performing at Relay for Life, another cause that is incredibly important to our NRG community.

Cancer affects an enormous number of Australian families. When someone receives a cancer diagnosis, the impact rarely stops with that one person. It reaches partners, children, parents, friends, workplaces and entire communities.

So when our kids participate in something like Relay for Life, we want them to understand that they're not simply there to perform.

They're there because this is what communities do.

We show up for each other.

We're not just teaching dance steps

Of course we want our dancers to become better dancers.

We want beautiful technique. We want strong performers. We want our teams to achieve things they're incredibly proud of.

But if our students leave NRG knowing how to execute a perfect routine but didn't learn how to contribute to the world around them, we will have failed at our mission.

We want to help raise whole humans.

Humans who notice other people.

Who understand that kindness sometimes requires action.

Who can work alongside people who are different from them.

Who don't always ask, "What's in this for me?"

Who understand that belonging to a family, team, workplace or community means sometimes doing something because it's good for us, rather than simply good for me.

That is why our values of Respect, Accountability, Kindness, Passion, Quality and Family aren't just words we put on a wall.

They're things we want our kids to practise.

Our kids need a little friction

As parents, coaches and teachers, it's natural to want to make life easier for our kids.

But perhaps we shouldn't remove every inconvenience.

Some of those little points of friction are where incredibly important lessons live.

Showing up when you don't really feel like it.

Giving up something small so somebody else can have something bigger.

Helping without receiving anything in return.

Following through because you said you would.

Putting the needs of the group ahead of your own for a moment.

None of those things are particularly glamorous.

But they're the building blocks of good teammates, good friends, good colleagues, good partners — and good community members.

We want our kids to lift others as they rise

Our mission at NRG is to nurture children so fiercely and tenderly - building the confidence to be fully themselves, the courage to face any challenge, and the strength to lift others as they rise.

That last part matters enormously to us.

Because achievement means very little if we only ever use it for ourselves.

Dance gives our kids skills.

NRG gives them a community in which they can practise using those skills, their time and their energy for something bigger than themselves.

And every time our families turn up to a fundraiser, volunteer, perform at a community event, donate or simply lend a hand, our kids are watching.

They're learning:

This is what we do.

We show up.

We contribute.

We look after people.

We're part of something bigger than ourselves.

And perhaps that's one of the most important things we could ever teach them.
