We talk a lot about dance and cheer. The skills, the competitions, the teams. And yes — all of that matters.
But here's something we don't talk about enough. Something most studios aren't doing at all.
Every single week at NRG, before your child runs a routine or hits a single skill, we spend time on their mind.
Not in a fluffy, let's-talk-about-our-feelings way. In a structured, intentional, evidence-based way. Because we genuinely believe that the mental skills we teach inside this studio will follow your child into every classroom, friendship, challenge, and hard moment they face for the rest of their lives.
That's not an accident. It's a program.
This season, we introduced our Mental Resilience and Mindset Program across every age group at NRG. From our Tiny athletes aged 4 to our Juniors at 15, every child is working through the same seven core concepts — just in a way that's matched to where their brain is actually at developmentally.
We built this because we kept seeing two types of athletes in our studio — and we're guessing you might recognise one of them in your own child.
There's the athlete who wants the dream but hasn't quite connected it to the daily grind yet. The one who loves the idea of competing, loves the idea of being great, but finds it hard to show up with full effort on a Tuesday night when they're tired and school was hard.
And there's the athlete who is deeply motivated — but perfectionism is quietly stealing their joy. The one who lands a skill and immediately looks for what was wrong. The one who finds it almost impossible to accept a compliment, or to feel proud without immediately moving the goalposts.
We see both of these kids every week. We love both of them. And now we have a real, structured way to help both of them.
Every week, for 5 to 15 minutes depending on their age group, our coaches deliver one focused mindset concept to their team. Same structure every time — a physical reset to settle their nervous system, a short teaching moment, a reflection activity, and then we connect it directly to their training on the floor.
The concepts build on each other across the season. They cover things like:
Dreams require behaviours — connecting what they want with how they actually show up. Not just hoping for something. Choosing it, in the boring moments and the hard ones.
Discomfort is not danger — teaching kids the difference between something that's hard and something that's actually wrong. This one is huge. So many kids have learned to stop when things get uncomfortable. We're teaching them that discomfort is usually the exact place where growth is happening.
Effort is a skill — helping athletes understand that consistent effort isn't a personality trait you either have or you don't. It's trainable. And it doesn't have to depend on how they feel that day.
Progress needs proof — this one is for our perfectionists. Instead of just telling them they're doing well, we help them collect real, specific evidence of their own growth. Because confidence built on proof is so much more durable than confidence built on praise.
Team standards beat mood — teaching kids that their standard doesn't change based on how they feel. Their mood is allowed to. Their standard isn't. And that's not harsh — it's genuinely freeing.
Pressure is a privilege — building personalised pre-performance routines so competition day doesn't feel like a threat. Nerves mean you care. We're not trying to get rid of them. We're teaching kids to perform with them.
We want to be really clear about something. We are not psychologists. We're not trying to be. If any of our athletes show signs of serious distress, we have a very clear process and we involve the right people immediately.
What we are is a group of trusted adults who show up consistently and teach skills. And we believe those two things — showing up and teaching skills — are more powerful than most people realise.
Every session ends with something specific. Not "good job today." But "Mia — your arms were so much sharper in that second run. That's your effort showing up." We're teaching kids to find their own evidence. To build their confidence from the inside out.
The program is also built with parents in mind. Each week's session comes with a parent link — a simple way to reinforce the same language and tools at home. Because the best results happen when what we're doing in the studio is echoed in the car on the way home, at the dinner table, before a test or a scary social moment.
We had a parent ask us recently, very kindly, whether all of this mindset work was "really necessary" for a dance class.
And we get it. On the surface, you sign your child up to learn to dance or cheer. To get fit, to have fun, to perform.
But here's what we know. A child who can manage pressure will have an easier time in exam conditions. A child who knows how to reset after a mistake will bounce back from setbacks in friendships and in life. A child who understands that their effort is a choice — not a feeling — will show up differently in everything they do.
We're not just building better athletes. We're building better humans. And at NRG, those two things are inseparable.
So yes. It's necessary. We think it might actually be the most important thing we do.
